Character Name: Riku
Character Canon: Kingdom Hearts
Canon Point: Post-Melody of Memory.
Age: 18

Crime: World destruction.

Background: Please do not make me explain all of Kingdom Hearts.

Personality:
"I know it's out there somewhere. The strength I need."
- "Strength for what?"
"To protect the things that matter."

Having grown up happy, but restricted, in his small island home of Destiny Islands, Riku had great ambitions from a young age. To see the world beyond the shores, ready to jump at the opportunity to explore and evolve. To become strong.

A chance meeting which changed the trajectory of his life forever happened when he was only five years old, and ten years later all those dreams took an extremely unfortunate left turn as Riku's inner darkness was spurred into opening the door to his world's heart and letting the much larger, more tangible darkness housed there overrun his home. This was his ticket out - letting the darkness carry him away, Riku was finally able to escape the limits he had been born into and was free to seek strength. He would justify this to himself, having it manipulated into his beliefs by adults more powerful than him, even over the ruins of his home and the bonds shattered by his actions.

Thankfully, Sora was there to fix it.
"I'm taking the middle road."
- "You mean the twilight road to nightfall?"
"No. It's the road to dawn."

The weight of his choices would not quickly leave him. For a long time even after his world was destroyed and the deepest darkness (not truly his own) had seemingly left his heart, Riku deemed himself unworthy to stand alongside his friends. Instead, he supported from the shadows, making every attempt to conquer his inner darkness with... initially mixed results. Nevertheless, he persevered, willing to give up his form and the chance to reunite with his friends to ensure their safety.

Of course his friends were having none of this self-sacrificial nonsense, and Kairi physically dragged him into reuniting them both with Sora, which turned out the best for everyone.
- "I just... want to protect the one person who matters."
"...I know the feeling."

It takes some time and more than a few hurdles, but now having accepted his inner darkness as an immutable part of him, Riku has matured into a more complete person. Having been given a title in Master, he has had to learn quickly to step up and lead when needed. While still burdened by the actions of his past, he has fully dedicated himself to making up for the myriad of sins he had committed while standing alongside his friends and compatriots. In particular, he finds his childhood goal of "protect the things that matter" evolving a second stage - "protecting the person who matters".

Determined and driven, Riku treads a careful line of self-awareness. A lot rests on his shoulders, and his confidence to complete what is expected of him wavers constantly. He is willing, now, to let his heart guide him... theoretically. The trauma and guilt that persistently (and not unfairly) haunts him trips him up on this, placing barriers no longer between himself and others, but within his own mind. His self esteem is really not great, though he's adept at hiding it behind genuine competence and a general lighter outlook than he has had in the past. Despite their best efforts, he is still ready to throw himself in front of any blow for his friends. He is a protector, first and foremost, as he has always wanted to be. It borders on a saviour complex, only reigned in by the company he keeps who pretty much all have the same issue.

Despite the literal darkness hanging over him, Riku has become a personable and friendly soul. No longer turning away from his bonds, he is always willing to lend and ear or a hand to people who need it. On another lighter note, Riku does have a playful side. Having always been competitive, the desire to prove himself when he was younger has mellowed into a much gentler affinity for a challenge. His sense of humour is snarky, teasing, and sometimes dry, but the fact that it still exists in the first place is somewhat of a miracle.

With how much combat and all the world-ending stakes he has seen, Riku's instincts are sharp. He's intelligent, able to fill in gaps and put the effort into investigating mysteries. Despite this, he often refuses to acknowledge his own feelings in favour of prioritising others, which puts up walls that he needs to be guided around before he can see what might be obvious to everyone else about himself.

There is always going to be darkness in Riku's core, but it now works in complete tune with his light. Riku's goals are now set stronger than ever. Protect the things - the people - that matter most.

Abilities: Riku wields a keyblade, Braveheart, a weapon bound to him. Keyblades are wielded like swords, and serve as in-canon everytools; point a keyblade at something that can even vaguely be considered to be in the states of "locked/unlocked" and it'll do whatever you need it to. These abilities will be nerfed here - we're not opening any world keyholes or anyone's heart, but it'll work on normal doors and stuff just fine. Keyblades can be summoned and dismissed by their wielders, and people without the necessary criteria to wield them are unable to handle a keyblade more than momentarily.

Additionally, Riku is adept spellcaster. He can utilise the main elements - Fire, Blizzard, Thunder - at a range of levels, as well as create barriers for defense and heal himself or others with Curaga. Due to his mastered darkness being incorporated into his fighting style, his spells often have Dark elements to them, Dark Firaga of particular note. His Shotlock, Dark Divide, is another example of this.

His speed and strength exceed that of a normal human's, but not to a truly superhuman degree for the most part. The exceptions include his ability to Doubleflight (an air jump) and Sonic Dodge/Dark Roll, where he blips into a little glowy orb of darkness for a moment and reappears a few feet away.

Inventory: Braveheart.
His Gummiphone (unable to connect, but at least there's Classic Kingdom games on it!).
His outfit, which is mildly magical in nature - it wards off darkness.
Two ethers and one elixir.

Samples: TDM toplevel with several threads, additional small one (ongoing)

Questions: None!
